Although the unusual name, the Centro de Lancamentos da Barreira do Inferno -CBLI (launching center) is an Brazilian Airforce base, being the pioneer of launching-rocket centers in South America. The Center was created by 1965,in Natal and completed 48 years of existence in 2013.
Curiously, the center`s name was given by the fishermen in the region , because of the sun reflection on the cliffs base, always returning red like fire when the sun goes down.
It was developed to execute and help with the space machines launching and tracking and data collection, the CLBI also does tests, research and develop other technological activities of the interest of the Brazilian Airforce. There were 2935 launchings since its creation.
The Cultural and Turistic Information Center preserve the Launching Center's history and the cliffs heritage, and its open to visitation is previously scheduled and it is free of cost, to provide knowledge about its activities to the public.
Is possible to to see original spacecrafts pieces and replicas used there, its also possible to see weather radar, as well as an AT-26 an aircraft produced in Brazil a key piece to the military industry development and photos that shows its history.
Another interesting aspect of the Center it the Projeto Tamar (Tamar Project), that is a research, protection and care of five species of sea turtles that live in Brazil, all of them under the possibility of extinction as: Cabeçuda (Caretta careta), Verde (Lepidochelys olivacae), Oliva (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Couro (Denuchelys corlace). One of the biggest spawning that happen in the South Atlantic is of the Pente turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) one of the turtles in high risk of extinction nationally and internationally.
Since 2005, the spawns in the beaches near the Center are monitored by the Project and the help of the military. Seeing that the beaches are protect and isolated, totally dark during the night it is the perfect place for the turtle spawn. But, since this turtle are in their reproductive period, visits are not allowed in the beach.
The center will also have a World Cup schedule.
The CLBI works everyday, from 9h to 16h30. Visits are free and has guided visitation with the militaries, but only in Portuguese.
